Matthew 26:24 Commentary

The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

It can seem like ‘harsh words’ at first glance– here the savior of the world is saying that Judas would have been better off without the option of salvation. That sort of policy flies in the face of, say, the Catholic opposition to capital punishment: if you kill the guy, you eliminate room for the Holy Spirit to convert his soul.

However, after some reflection with a friend of mine, I’ve decided it isn’t anger or warning, but empathy and a sad realization for Jesus: perhaps the most learned and close friend of Jesus is going to betray him, and Jesus already knows this. He has known since he laid eyes on Judas that here his friend was going to be the proximate cause of his crucifixion.

I don’t even think it was his betrayal that saddened Jesus the most; it was his eventual suicide. We are all Judas when we sin; we by our apathy request that Jesus get on the cross rather than us, even though we have been commanded to it, to stick to it with our own bloodied shirt. But Judas’ suicide was the salt that fatally infected the wound of betrayal: Judas began his betrayal by handing Jesus over, and ended his betrayal by forbidding Jesus to intervene for his soul. There were lots of people that contributed to the crucifixion that Jesus doesn’t seem to upset about. But his ‘woes’ are with Judas. It is because at the last Judgment, Jesus will have no option but to stand before one of his best friends and disciples once again, and to point him downward. While there will be no broken hearts among the Just on the last day (see Dante’s Paradisio for a poetic description of the souls in heaven, while rejoicing in God’s judgment, looking down unsympathetically at the souls in hell), while on earth Jesus still mourns the coming responsibility that he will have to bear. And so he says ‘woe’ not because Judas will crucify Jesus on earth, but because Jesus is forced into the position of condemning Judas for eternity.

13 mile bike route I am going to try once my papers are done. Does anyone know if there are rides to/from purcelville?

(flying) back down Harewood.
Cross through CUA Campus,
Monroe over the tracks back home.

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer
Lk. 11.2-4

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. (Lk. 18.10-14)

Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Commentary

Ver. 6. Because he who should pray in his chamber, and at the same time desire it to be known by men, that he might thence receive vain glory, might truly be said to pray in the street, and sound a trumpet before him: whilst he, who though he pray in public, seeks not thence any vain glory, acts the same as if he prayed in his chamber.

MENOCHIO, Giovanni Stefano. – Nacque a Padova il 9 dic. 1575 da Giacomo e da Margherita Candiani, figlia di Giovanni Antonio, mercante di Pavia.
Secondo il libro di famiglia, il M. fu battezzato il 15 dicembre nella chiesa di S.Bartolomeo di Padova, ed ebbe come padrini il giureconsulto Bartolomeo Selvatico e il celebre anatomista Girolamo Fabrici d’Acquapendente (Franchi, p. 341).
Dal matrimonio, celebrato il 10 luglio 1557, la coppia aveva avuto undici figli: Giovanni, che morì poco dopo la nascita, Gaspare Francesco, Paola Emilia, Giovanni (morto il giorno dopo la nascita), Giovanni Matteo, Laura, Daria Maddalena, Antonia Caterina, Olimpia, Pietro Martire e il M., l’ultimogenito.
Celebre giurista e senatore di Milano, il padre, che aveva ottenuto nel 1601 l’inclusione dei Menochio tra le famiglie decurionali pavesi, aveva diligentemente annotato nel suo libro di famiglia, interamente scritto in latino, ogni passo della sua vita; aveva poi lasciato il libro in consegna proprio al M. che ne scrisse le ultime righe. In seguito il M. lavorò a una biografia del padre in latino, di cui rimangono quindici capitoli (Milano, Biblioteca Trivulziana, Mss., 1627), insieme con l’autobiografia di Giacomo (in Franchi, pp. 342-354).
